I don’t care if you are a student, a business owner, half way through medical school, or just working at your local Starbucks! Remember this: Don’t chase money, chase opportunity. As Jessie J has taught us, “It’s not about the Money, Money, Money!” It’s not actually about the money at all! At the end of the day they are just pieces of paper that some people let dictate what they are worth. I’m no author of a big business book like Simon Sinek, but I have experienced chasing money and the difference I have felt by chasing my passion. Don’t chase money, chase the opportunity.
Change your why: When I first started college, I was SO worried about being successful. I knew that the world was so unpredictable. I thought that I would need to study something to ensure I would have enough money for anything that life threw at me! Whether that was medical bills, future family, etc. I decided to major in finance… Now I knew I liked business, but if you were to ask my WHY I choose that path, it was solely for the financial security that came along with it! My WHY was safe. It also meant me chasing money in a job I maybe didn’t love until I retired, so what did I do? I dropped out and began to chase opportunities that helped me create a life that I am excited to wake up to! Why do you get up in the morning? Is it to go to the tireless, 9-5 job, that pays the bills? To study for that midterm that you just aren't interested in? I’m not saying when life gets hard give up, your path is different than mine. If becoming a doctor is your passion, then you need all the schooling you can get! We have to work hard for the things we want, but it’s always important to take a step back and ask yourself, why?
How will this opportunity fulfill you: Let me tell you what I actually love and am very passionate about! I love writing, I LOVE helping people- sharing my experiences and just sitting down one on one over lunch to do that. I love being creative, taking pictures and editing them, thinking of creative ideas, marketing, all of that jazz! How would a finance desk job be able to fulfill any of those passions, simple answer, IT WOULDN’T! Now don’t get me wrong. You could be like my dad who literally lives, breathes, and adores finance. If that’s the case congratulations. If not, pursue what you love and by becoming fulfilled, you will become the expert.
Value what you know and start charging for it: Once you become confident in the things that you love, whether that’s photography, math, having a PhD is phycology, you are worth something to the world! You have talents, insights, and drive for that specific field that no one can give you.“You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don’t make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off you.” -Maya Angelou. Don’t sell yourself short. You are worth that knowledge that you have. If you’re an influencer don’t do collaborations for free! You work hard to take pictures, create an aesthetic, and put time into it! A lawyer wouldn’t compromise his pay for a $6 t shirt so why should you? You have knowledge and ideas that only you have! Don’t second guess yourself!
Find Other’s to Help Along the Way: When you have come to find knowledge- teach. When you know something that is worth sharing, share! “Successful people are always looking for opportunities to help others, unsuccessful people are always asking, “what’s in it for me?” -Brian Tracy. Understand that there is enough success in the world for everyone. Don’t worry about who is better/ more successful/ has more followers. It’s not about them, it’s about what you can do and who you can help.
Create a Life You Enjoy Living!: I don’t care if you are an Influencer, an amazing blogger, a construction worker, or a teacher, if you have passion and drive, if you truly love what you do, success will follow. So, now you’re probably dying to hear my success story right? Well news flash- that is still a work in progress! I’m just starting to make money doing the things I love. I work hard and sometimes I get scared and discouraged. “As we pursue our goals, we may meet difficulties or distractions. Other people may ridicule our efforts. Or maybe we will find it difficult to understand or use what we have learned… But, if we can just persist, the proof or benefits of our efforts will eventually come to us.”- Earl M. Monson. Success is a process, but with great risk comes great reward. Chase opportunities and you won’t have to worry about money. “Instead of wondering when your next vacation is, maybe you should set up a life you don’t need to escape from.” -Beth Godin
